University Apartments

Philosophy

The University Apartments have staff members who assist students in making a smooth transition from residential college life to independent living. They are committed to creating a safe and healthy atmosphere that is conducive to promoting individual student success. Emphasis is placed on the education of the whole person. This process involves fostering an environment where undergraduate students respect their apartment community and the surrounding neighborhood. Opportunities are provided for personal growth and for developing the skills necessary to live independently. Highlights of these skills include; the development of critical thinking skills, life skills, professional skills, graduate school searches, and instilling in the residents a sense of community both within each complex and within the surrounding neighborhoods. In this way, the University Apartment staff works to engrain in students that they are a part of a community and to educate them of the responsibilities and privileges that come with such a membership.

To meet these ends, the University Apartments staff is comprised of eleven Resident Advisors, a Graduate Fellow and an Apartment Director, who oversee the day-to-day management of the buildings for approximately 600 residents. These residents are housed in fourteen apartment buildings located on campus, in University City, and in the Skinker-Debaliviere neighborhood of the City of St. Louis. All of the buildings are owned by Washington University and staffed by the Office of Residential Life.
